Toledo’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Effort

Toledo is actively pursuing a range of environmental initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainability and improving the quality of life for its residents. These efforts encompass various projects and programs that address key environmental challenges.

Climate Action Plan

In June 2025, the City of Toledo approved a Climate Action Plan (CAP) focusing on municipal services and operations. This plan outlines sustainable practices already in place and sets forth actionable steps to ensure a resilient and healthy community for future generations.

One Percent for the Environment

Established in 2022, the One Percent for the Environment fund allocates resources toward renewable energy projects, protection of the Lake Erie watershed, and climate change mitigation efforts. The CAP serves as a guide for the strategic use of these funds to achieve the city’s environmental goals.

Food Waste Composting Program

Launched in October 2023, Toledo’s food waste composting program aims to reduce the amount of food waste entering landfills. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful (KTLCB), Metroparks Toledo, and other partners, focusing on sustainable waste management practices.

Detwiler Park Restoration

The restoration of Detwiler Park has led to the revitalization of 24 acres of wetland habitat through invasive species management, regrading, and native plantings. Additionally, 1,950 linear feet of stream along Mud Creek were restored, enhancing habitat quality and reducing sediment and nutrient loads to Lake Erie.

Stormwater Management

Toledo’s Environmental Services division manages the city’s stormwater permit coverage, working to keep local waterways clean. The Stormwater Management Plan includes goals such as educating the public, involving the community, detecting and eliminating illegal dumping, and monitoring stormwater quality.

Community Involvement

Residents can actively participate in these environmental efforts by:

  • Reporting illegal dumping into the storm sewer system.
  • Properly disposing of waste through programs like Clean Toledo and the Hoffman Landfill.
  • Implementing rain gardens to manage stormwater runoff.

By engaging in these initiatives, Toledoans contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community.
